Lego Batman: The Videogame
(Redirected from Lego Batman)
Lego Batman: The Videogame is a game developed by Traveller's Tales for the XBox 360, PS3, PS2, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP, and Windows. This installment is very similar to both Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones in that characters and the environments are made out of lego pieces, and much of the gameplay remains the same.
The game stars Batman and his sidekick Robin as the two heros battle against many villains in Gotham City. A number of the duos greatest foes have escaped from Arkham Asylum and have split up into three seperate groups, each led by a super-villain (Joker, Penguin, Riddler). They devise different plans to overthrow Gotham and take control of the city. Along with the many big name villains contained within each group, they also have a good number of thugs to assist them in their endeavors.
The Riddler's plan is put into action first, and he intends on robbing Gotham of its money from the Gold Reserve. He gets help from Two-Face, Mr Freeze, Poison Ivy, and Clayface. Riddler and Clayface initiate the first step of their plan by stealing a key for the federal reserve, although Clayface is captured in the process as he sees a huge pile of gold and is mesmorized by it. Then Riddler and Mr Freeze head to an abandoned ice cream factory to steal a freeze ray that they plan to use in a later scheme. Mr Freeze is captured as well by Batman as Riddler escapes. Afterwards he and Poison Ivy head to a plant where they steal growing seeds, and while there, Ivy is captured by Batman after she saves Riddler from Robin. Finally, Two Face and Riddler are shown stealing a super laser and using it to break into Reserve. That attempt is foiled as the laser is shown blasting back at them and destroying the weapon, but the two find a way into the building anyways and right into the pile of money.
We are then shown how Penguin plans to take control of Gotham, and that is by unleashing a horde of robot penguins armed with guns to hold citizens of the city hostage. Penguin is aided by Catwoman, Bane, Killer Croc, and Man-Bat. First off, Penguin and Bane steal a satellite dish that they plan on using to remotely control the penguins. In the process, Bane is captured by Gotham Police. Then, Penguin and Catwoman steal a jewel that will be used to power the satelite (Afterwards, Catwoman is captured by Batman but she gives the jewel to one of her cats). Killer Croc is the sent to rescue Catwoman, and during this, Man-Bat and Penguin take over a zoo and then use the machine they have created to unleash the Penguins on the population of Gotham, killing anyone in their path.
Lastly, Joker plans to pack a giant cathedral full of his laughing gas and then blow up the building, unleashing the substance all over the city. His followers include Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, and Killer Moth. Joker begins by sending a package to the Gotham City Police Department that results in the death of a few officers. Afterwards, he and Mad Hatter break into a chemical factory to steal the ingredients necessary for Joker's toxin. Joker and Harly Quinn then capture Commissioner James Gordon and hold him at an amusement park as a diversion for Batman and Robin while Joker continues his rampage across Gotham en route to the cathedral. Once there, Joker rigs the entire building with bombs and his toxin and plans to blow the place up once everything is set, whether he is able to escape or not.
Since there are both "Hero" and "Villain" missions, you get the viewpoint from both sides. If you tackle the missions as Batman, then you will be tasked with disrupting and stopping the numerous evil plans from happening. More often than not, it will result in the one of the man villains (Penguin, Riddler, Joker) leaving one of their stooges for you to capture while they escape. After each boss battle though, Batman is shown putting an end to their endeavors and locking them all up in Arkham. As the villains however, you are tasked with setting everything up and then at the end, the villains are successful in causing mayhem within Gotham.
The gameplay in Lego Batman is very similar to that of Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones. Players will be able to interact with the lego-built city around them, meaning most objects and buildings will be breakable. Fighting will take place both on the streets of Gotham as well as in the water and above ground in the air by using such vehicles as the Batmobile and Batplane. Traveling on land can be done on feet, by use of police cars and other vehicles, as well as gliding or use tightropes to walk over the city.
A good number of objects you'll find are unique to specific characters. For instance, if a crate has an orange handle on it, that means only characters with superstrength can move it, such as Bane or Killer Croc. Still, almost every character in the game has a unique ability. Some examples would be Catwoman being able to jump extremely high using a double-jump, Penguin releasing mini-penguins that explode after a period of time, or Mad Hatter being able to control characters using hypnosis. A number of different types of suits are also available to characters. Batman/Batgirl have a Glider suit (can fly), Sonic Suit (can break glass), Bat Bomb Detonator suit (blows up objects), and a Heat Protection suit (cant be burned by hot substances). Robin/Nightwing have the Technology suit (able to control machines), Scuba suit (able to swim), Magnetic suit (can walk up metal paths), and the Vaccum suit (able to collect lego pieces).
As with previous Lego games, Freeplay mode becomes available after completing a level in the story mode. In it, players will be able to choose from a number of different characters that they will be given access to, as opposed to only having two set characters like in the story mode. This will allow players to access certain areas and objects they otherwise could not reach. In total, there are 30 levels in the game (15 Hero/15 Villain) as well as two secret areas, including Wayne Manor and Arkham Asylum.
